Crunching is a creative and challenging way of learning about the behavior of our computers and improving them while helping the GPUGRID team to understand a bit more the mystery of the world we live in and the diseases that affect not only us, but also the people we love. The GPUGRID team couldn’t be more satisfied and proud of forming part of this noble project, and so we’d like to deeply thank each of the 1000 users that connect to us every day, making us part of their lives and making them part of ours, as a team.

Behind each computer, behind each GPU and each WU or forum post, there’s the real protagonist of our story as a community: YOU, the cruncher.

At GPUGRID, we are considering the possibility of starting a new campaign to thank the users that contribute with our project by sending them little tokens of gratitude, such as proteins/aminoacid molecules printed by our 3D printer or merchandising such as t-shirts or stickers. We still have to establish the contest rules, but most likely each of the user would have a probability of winning based on their contribution. Once in a while we would like to run a story about the winner, explaining why you crunch, what's the setup of your computer, a small description of yourselves or a picture of you and your token.

We believe that it would be a fun and productive experience but before anything we’d like to know your opinion, your suggestions and whether we have your support for this initiative. Let us know!

What a thoughtful and fun idea. It would be great to get to know more about our crunching mates. Count me in.

+100
I have a special weapon to promote my team, my teammates but even the GPUGRID.net project : the CSF website !
A website can count in the challenge ? ;)
I'll pass the information of this challenge to my teammates via the website at the official launch.

I'm definitely in, though I don't think I'll ever "win" anything. It's a very nice idea, though!

Why I crunch for GPUGRID?

Simple. My mom died from cancer in 2013 after a 2.5 year long battle and many chemo therapies that didn't help much, so I'd like to help out the guys behind GPUGRID who have a clue on how to tackle cancer and other diseases.

Another reason is that GPUGRID is one of the few medical projects where you get the feeling of that the money you pay for electricity is well spent as you know there are real "professionals in the field" behind this project so you don't waste electricity for nothing. I also crunch for Rosetta and POEM for the same reasons.

Even though I have low income and can only offer a single GTX750Ti for 8 hours a day, I still think that over time, it makes a small difference

That is a very nice idea indeed.
I would even buy some of your stickers, and you could ask more than it's printing costs.
I'm sure there will be other who would like to donate you this way.

[irony] I'll pay for you in BTC of course. :D [/irony]

If you want to scale the winning chance by project contribution (which itself does sound good - it gives you a feeling of getting more back the more you contribute) it may be a good idea to scale logarithmically or with the square root. This way "the more the better" still holds, but the chances for small crunchers are considerably enhanced compared to linear scaling.

If you want to send people something you'd need to contact them anyway. But if you do there should be an option to refuse the gift (maybe someone already got enough of them ;) or to pass it on to someone else.

Overall it'S a very nice idea :)

What about selling physical badges once they have been earned.

Yes I like the idea.
However 3D printing and shipping stuff all over the world is not cheap. For me the scientific goal of your project is way more important, and therefore I think that money could be better used for equipment or brilliant scientists perusing a PhD.

If I would be a winner for a gadget or shirt or something else, I would like to pay for it or make a donation.

What about introducing a shop with some nice T-Shirts, Polos, Shirts,... may 3D print of your account level molecules?

Give some nice discounts for crunching members.

I have 7 grand kids. Several are interested in science and one in will be going to a magnet school for math and science. 2 others are in advanced studies in science. They often brag about their papaw that does science on his computers.

It would be helpful when I am encouraging their interests in science if I could show something physical related to the projects. A 3d printed protein or amino acid molecule especially one I had earned here as a badge would be pretty cool. While I realize you want to use them as awards I would like to buy one as I earn it to show my grand kids. I would love to see a "store" where I could buy related merchandise for the grand kids.

I have tried to bring up my kids and now grand kids to be global citizens. To care about humanity and this planet. Being involved in international science projects I think helps show they too can be global citizens and contribute to the knowledge and betterment of human kind. Anything that helps make that real to kids I would like to see.

Thank you.

And I want to congratulate the GPUGrid team for innovations in the website. Especially statistics and the ability to see our participation in various projects....

In fact, a nice idea. Why I'm part of GPUGRID.net?

I like the idea of being part (with my computer) of a scientific project. So I got part of seti more than a decade ago. Still interested in astronomy, I think it is better now to work on real-world problems of humanity. That's why I switched to GPUGRID.

If there's anything I should win, I would like to pass this value as a donation.

If you own a 3D printer already then a proteins/aminoacid molecule of ones level + scientific publications contribution ranks would be awesome.

Or simply any kind of thing we could hold in our hands, wear, set on a desk, etc. Would add a very real component to the rather theoretical work.

If its 3D models, dont make them too big, so that production and shipping costs are low but sturdy enough so they dont brake.
Set a minimum price that includes all cost + a fixed donation.

You may even sell different sizes and for example for bigger models add a higher fixed donation value.

From a quick search, the production cost seems to go hand in hand with size.

http://www.trinckle.com/object.php?id=1378

and of course it depends on the material used. ( orange button "Konfigurieren und bestellen" for prices )

Implementing a shop may not be as easy as a lottery but compared to the handfull of winners everybody would win.
