Does this new unofficial client address any of the current bugs or do anything useful at all? No... Neither will the finished product. They are adding some thingie that will allow connection somehow through FaceBook... I guess they have this idea that if they only connect through FaceBook all of a sudden no one will notice that the actual BOINC system does not work all that well ... But, with hordes of Face Book users suddenly will decide to BOINC and the world will be safe for democracy ... Sigh, sorry for the sarcasms ... but this along with other flights of fancy is one of the reasons we are in the state we are in ... critical issues are ignored while eye-candy is stressed. The only good news is they think they can be done mid month ... There is also a 6.6.31 version out and the mail list already has 6-8 complaints on it from it crashing and other issues ... oh, and in both versions several patches that made it into 6.6.28 may have gone missing ... I cannot follow the details to be sure ... Rom says they are in, anecdotal evidence says them may be among the missing ...

Facebook? Ummmmm,......Facebook. What the hell does that have to do with anything? Sheesh. Things are not running well enough to try to attract people that have no clue what-so-ever. Am I missing something? Facebook? Really?

Am I missing something? Facebook? Really? Could be worse. They could've made it interface with MySpace or Twitter instead. lol

From face value, this is all about trying to open untapped markets. It's probably connected to funding based on new sign ups per month. All Boinc needs to do is set up some Facebook groups under the usual banners of "save the world from disease", "save the world from global warming", "save the world from insert text" and people will sign up whether they understand it fully or not.

If there is a design intent, I have not seen it, none was published for comment so I don't have a good idea of what they are thinking (if they are thinking) ...

If there is a design intent, I have not seen it, none was published for comment so I don't have a good idea of what they are thinking (if they are thinking) ... Some how I don't know If any users of Facebook will want to do Boinc(Dreamers and their dreams), Seems kinda pointless for them to do this, But We shall see. Yeah and We don't need that, Of course at least We do have Boinc, F@H is just an app like S@H was(cpu and gpu), All manual control and such. That's too bad about the people who didn't migrate to Boinc, They liked I gather something that required almost no setup to run. ____________

Some how I don't know If any users of Facebook will want to do Boinc(Dreamers and their dreams), Seems kinda pointless for them to do this, But We shall see. The fundamental problem with the dream is that people that are FaceBook types are not likely to be geek types (well, there will be some cross-over) but, as a rule they are going to be fire and forget types and I don't think BOINC Is anywhere close to that ... just look at the side shows we have here off and on with updates and drivers and crashes including BSOD ... someone that links to us via FB and has an issue like that is going to publicize the heck out of the issue ... the last thing we need is to create alienation of people with a megaphone to hand ... There was more to it than that ... but, yes, putting it simply they did not have any interest in most of the bells and whistles of BOINC ... worse, UCB did not do a good job of selling the change and why it was important and figuring out a way to make the transition smoother ... I know a guy that says he knows a bunch of those people and they are still out there watching BOINC and waiting ... but if they keep adding frills and not correcting Trac tickets that are 5-6 years old ... well, that is no way to attract industrial strength participants ... safety, security, reliablility ... and we have none of those really ... heck, versions are put up, flagged as recommended before they have been tested ...

To be fair: if you just use one or a hand full of cpu projects BOINC can be quite "fire and forget". Just not all the time and certainly not when it comes to GPUs.

Therefor they should set the default load to 50% or something. Usually the last 30% load pushes cooling systems towards their limits. I used to run boinc on a laptop with 65% CPU load (on all cores). The fan was audible, but still a lot quieter than at full throttle...

But I guess you could find just as many people who'd be upset if the default setting was not 100%.

But I guess you could find just as many people who'd be upset if the default setting was not 100%. Using the CPU throttle causes tasks on many projects to fail with "lock file" errors and one other problem which I seem to have misplaced in memory... Also, if they load it on a laptop for many they are going to see their laps or laptops (or both) fail ... in that for many people their ONLY computer is a laptop ... well ... BOINC is not really suited for running on laptops ... I know it can be done, and many do run BOINC on their laptops ... but ... Personally *I* think this is another misguided recipe for disaster ... but what do I know ... As to the earlier comment on BOINC being fire and forget on an single or handful of projects ... well, yes and no ... One bug Richard is chasing is an "initialization" bug where in effect he has only two projects eligible for work fetch and then the one that actually should be selected is not selected because of a late disqualification ... well, then that means that the first project is scanned and SHOULD have been replaced by the more eligible project (which is disqualified late) but it is not ... so the wrong project is selected for work fetch ... In that this is a "timing" and special case bug (though I suspect it is actually more common than is commonly known) the last fix has not yet been proven to be a miss ... Anyway, the point is that as has been noted in another thread the developers have the mind set that they know more than the operators and mostly resist giving us the tools to better control the behavior of the client. Fundamentally this is one of those reasons the participants from SETI Classic did not move up with us... they liked only running SaH and having total control over how, when, where, why tasks were run using the available tools... so that the science application was run the way they wanted it run ... not how UCB wanted it run ...

It seems to me that the 6x batch of BOINC pretty much all have issues (many of which would rationally characterize all the releases as beta).
