I keep getting the error that the "X server" is running... what is it and how do I stop it to install the drivers?

I've googled it and saw:

ctrl+alt+f1
sudo /ect/init.d/gdm stop

but that is not working for me...

Well, to help you it would be great to know which OS you use, and maybe also which graphics card?

On Ubuntu you could try

sudo init 1

But actually there are also some tools to install the drivers...

If you use Fedora, go to rpm.livna.org, and in the repository RPMS section click on the repository RPM which fits for your Version of Fedora, this will add the livna repositories to your download sources.
Then open a Terminal and type

su
yum install kmod-nvidia

Reboot and that's it, the right drivers should get loaded at boot...

If you use Ubuntu you could go to Software Sources, and make sure 3rd party repositories are checked. then you can start the Synaptic package manager and do a search for envy - this is a graphical tool to install the nvidia drivers...

Hope this helps a little bit!

Stefan

Sorry I was in a bit of a rush posting that. It is Ubuntu that I use and the card is an 8600gts 512mb

I searched for envy and downloaded the envy core but it wont run?!?!

I will try the sudo init 1

You'll also need envy-gtk, this will create a new entry in the Applications/System tools menu called Envy, start it, and pick the driver you would like to install - the rest should be self explaining... ;)

That makes more sence now :)

I tried the sudo init 1 and it gave me some I/O error on device loop 0 and rcS-sulogin main process terminated with status 2

Thx for the help

*EDIT*
Envy is having an error on install... it couldn't access lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock

*2nd Edit*
Guess one has to close the package manager first :)
