2 days ago I was running my win XP pro SP3 with both my 8800's crunching away no problem. I believe Vista requires that both video cards be hooked up to a monitor or "tricked" into thinking they are. I am not sure of the thread, but there is one that details how to create a "fake" monitor using a DVI->VGA adapter. http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=399

Keep in mind that if You don't leave the 2nd monitor hooked up when You reboot--You'll have the same problem again. If you don't need a 2nd monitor hooked all the time--that's the benefit of the vga/dvi dummy.....
