Hi!

I'm a bit new here...
I currently have a GTX970 and want to upgrade to a 1070.
Since I want to help more, I would not want to sell the 970.

Question is, will both cards work good using PCIe x8 not SLI(rather than one on x16).
And whether their performance will drop or not.

I saw a couple of users here who use 2 cards on PC and wanted to hear some feedback on this.

I hope I wrote in the right section, tried looking for answers in other threads but didn't quite find what I was looking for.

Also have a 850W PSU, so it should be enough.

Thanks in advance!

At the moment I don't think you can use a 970 and a 1070 in the same system on this project.

Caelus, you might want to consider selling your GTX970 and get a new GTX1060 3G instead, to work beside the 1070. Actually that move will be beneficial to you in many ways.

The price difference between your used GTX970 (I would sell at 150€) and a new 1060 3G (e.g. Palit Dual = 210€) is just 60€. In return, you have a new card, 2 (or more) years warranty, ~20% less power consumption and ~10% more SP GFLOPS.

If you want to play games now and again, the 1060 also performs equal (Hitman, Deus Ex, Tomb Raider) or better than the 970 (Witcher 3, GTA V, Far Cry Primal).

Last but not least... you could use the 1070 and the 1060 in the same system as desired.

From my experience, PCIe x8 will slow down your GPUs just a little, as long as you mean PCIe version 3.0 (which I hope). Well, if you want to run 2 cards, you have no choice anyway as most boards provide x8 only for dual GPU use. But I think you don't have to worry a lot.

Hello,

You can use 2 differents graphics card with BOINC. You will :
- Not use a SLI link jumper
- Configure the cc_config.xml file to enforce boinc to use the 2 cards. The default parameter use only the fastest of the 2 cards. You can define a project for each GPU.
- Find a driver which support the two cards (it is the more difficult)

For the pci express speed, my computer with a i7 920 (X58 Chipset), I have a GTX 580 and a old quadro (based on G84) with vista, the latest dirver which support these 2 cards is the 322. It is not supported by GPU GRID but the two card works well with Prime Grid. The pci express speed is 5 GT/s and the GTX 580 has 99 % of charge and runs at 920 Mhz / 1038 mV. Actuelly, the quadro is not in use, this card is only for the display (I watch videos and TV with a USB Tuner).

You can't use Pascal GPUs (GTX 10x0) mixed with older GPUs in the same system, as the 9.14 app does not support older cards, and the 8.48 app does not support Pascal GPUs, and the BOINC manager does not know or take care about this, and it will make every workunit on the older card fail, thus your host will use up its daily quota in a very short time.

Right! And in view of that ... let me get back to the 1060 upgrade .... ;-)

Are the boinc devs actually working on this issue or as Berkeley funding stopped we are supposed to edit the source?
