Hello, I don't think the Linux VM on Windows has been finalized. Even if it were, the performance drop over using just linux will be substantial. You will get the best bare-metal performance by switching to linux.

Pit,

Are you trying to
Install VirtualBox on a Windows machine,
Create a virtual machine inside VirtualBox,
Install a Linux operating system on the virtual machine,
Install BOINC on the Linux virtual machine,
Attach to GPUGRID,
Run the Linux QC tasks?

If yes, I have been able to get that done successfully on a Windows 10 machine.

Please let us know generally what you tried and how far you were able to get.

Which version of Linux were you trying to use? Are you very familiar with Linux use?

Then I can write up some instructions for you to use.

Since Pit didn't respond, I will, since I have the same question (only I haven't gotten far enough to make anything happen yet.)
1. Yes, I installed Virtual Box on my Windows 10 machine.
2. No, I am not trying to create a virtual machine inside VirtualBox (at least not deliberately.)
3.I installed Ubuntu for the virtual machine.
4. I have not installed Boinc on the virtual machine.
5. Yes, the whole reason (in my case) for installing VM was for the GPUGRID Linux work units.
6. Yes, I want to run the QC tasks.

I am not at all familiar with Linux. This 'having a decent computer' thing is new to me!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(New guy, first post ever -- yes, I mean anywhere. Us older generation..)

Linux has more than 1 variation.

VM supports Linux Kernel V 2.6 and 3.x
the newest ubuntu version has 4.x.

Which is the easiest way to work with boinc?

This is bizarre, I had this working on an older computer a few weeks ago. That computer is no longer functional. Today I tried to get this working on a newer computer and have been unable to get it going. I tried with both Ubuntu 18.04 and 16.04. I don't know if the QC app has changed or what?

If one of the admins wants to look at my error messages, the tasks are in my task list. If they want to contact me about testing, I would be glad to help.

But for now, it is a non-starter for me.

VirtualBox 5.2.12 works on my SuSE kernels 4.4. I only have to recompile the kernel modules every time there is a kernel upgrade using /sbin/vboxconfig.
