Message boards : Wish list : LINUX OS for Xeon32 Bit/ GTX 1060 GPU

Will appreciate if someone will recommend a web site where I can download LINUX for my older Dell T3500 Xeon 32Bit box currently driven by Vista. If I understand I also need to secure an installer. From what I have read online, the effort might become quite complicated. I have to do this since GPUGrid will NOT let me access GPU tasks with my current Vista/Xeon/GTX 1060 setup. Frustating. Also, Microsoft advised me Windows 10 will not work on my older Dell T3500 setup; the Windows 10 OS would probably have solved the problem of acquiring tasks.

OR, perhaps should I just buy another machine with W10 to add to my current 4 and install my GTX 1060 in it. Perhaps this would be the most secure option. https://www.gpugrid.net/apps.php As shown in above link, I'm afraid that New version of ACEMD is designed for 64 bits operating systems only.

where I can download LINUX for my older Dell T3500 Xeon 32Bit box Checking this model Dell, it would appear to have an Intel Xeon W3530 processor (released in 2010). Intel started releasing mainstream 64 bit processors in 2004, following AMDs lead in 2003. The current Vista OS installed may be a 32 bit installation, but this PC can take a 64 bit OS. In this day and age, 64 bit OS is the only way to go. You will not notice any major difference in operations of the PC moving from 32 bit to 64 bit, apart from the ability to add more than 4Gb of RAM. As ServicEnginIC highlighted, use 64 bit to stay compatible with GPUgrid tasks on Linux. Ubuntu is a popular distribution of Linux and a good place to start. https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop. Version 18.04.3 LTS provides Long Term Support for updates and drivers and a good option when first starting out. The install process is now quite mature for Linux (particularly Ubuntu) and should be as easy as a Windows Install.

Graphics driver installation for Linux has improved, but I've found it to still be too much of a hit or miss experience. Misses send you straight to command line hell, and for that reason I like Pop! OS. It's a version of Ubuntu with the graphics driver already built in, which saves a lot of grief. I'm not sure I would choose it for daily use, the desktop GUI is pretty sparse, but it's great for crunching. There are two versions, one for AMD / Intel graphics and one for Nvidia. Make sure to install the correct one.

Will appreciate if someone will recommend a web site where I can download LINUX for my older Dell T3500 Xeon 32Bit box currently driven by Vista. Your might consider the free upgrade to win10. Your system should have the license for win7 and a free upgrade is still available. If your system has the old bios then a bios upgrade will help. All of the used systems I bought on Ebay ran win10 at no cost. https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-SLIC-2-1-for-Dell-Precision-T3500-N-series Many Linux apps run faster than windows especially SETI but YMMV.

I want to THANK all of you who have been so gracious in wanting to help me solve my old computer's operating and graphics problems so I can process particularly the new ACEMB tasks specifically forthcoming from GPUGrid. Microsoft (repeating myself) has informed me that Windows 10 will NOT work on my XEON powered machine and at age 88 years I honestly do not have the capability to experiment (what it would be for me)in securing and installing the various(?) forms of Linux on my Dell computer of the 32Bit variety. Therefore, I am going to take the easy and very practical way out and purchase a refurbished Intel I3 or I5 powered machine with windows 10 installed and relocate the GTX 1060 thereto as well. That should put me in good shape for a few more years after which I will terminate my support of the many BOINC supported projects through the distributed computed system.
