What is the fastest card for SETI@home Beta GPU app?
Maybe a passively cooled version?

Do I need a new PSU for the GPU? It is Tagan's PSU (480 Watts) and currently the system is using about 200 Watts.

Do I need some kind of an adapter for the GPU power connectors? I do not have PCI Express 2 and my PSU does not have PCI Express 2 power connectors.

Does it make any sense to put a PCI Express 2 card to a PCI Express motherboard?

HTH.

You should ask that on the SETI@home Beta forum

The fastes card at the moment for the best price is a GTX260² resp. a GTX260 Plus, the GTX280 is only dearer, not really faster.

Passiv cooled in this power range? Dream on ... ;)

You need 2 6-pole PCI-Express power connector for a GTX260 for a GTX280 you need one 6-pole and one 8-pole power connector.

Don' use a PSU wih less than 500 Watt, I prefer 600 Watt with cable management. A smaller PSSU makes no sense, you need approximately 300 Watt for a 2,5 GHz Quad and a GTX280 on full power. maybe for a GTX260 you can use a 500 Watt PSU, but I don't can advise it.

In the case of my graphic cards is no difference between a PCI-E and a PCI-E 2 board.

What applies for GPUGRID should apply for Seti.
So, 280 is the current fastest card.

Soon 295GTX will be available. I`ts something like 260 core 216 GX2. Maybe better w8 for it? :)

PS. I`ll w8.

I guess the point is to know when is soon, as the card offers more flops for sure.

Maybe, but I do not think their application is as intensive as GPUGRID. I tried to follow along in their forum but there is so much to read. They do not really need the fastest.

I think they have a shorter run time 2-3 hours for GPU's and probably can make use of slower cards not able to participate here.

It seems their deadline is about three weeks, 1/8/2009 for one downloaded a few hours ago, my first. But I still have to wait 8 hours for my current GPUGRID task to finish. Can't tell run length since it is the first it has an estimate of 00:00:00. I'm going to test a very few, but ultimately I will stay with GPUGRID and only use SETI@home as a backup should this project run dry of work, which seems to happen once and a while. Same for other projects as they come online.

I'll let you know how one compares after it completes.

I see they have windows only so far, and it appears their windows app only uses 4% or less of the CPU on windows. Currently the GPUGRID I'm running is showing 37 to 44.

I've crunched some of the SETI Beta WUs while I don't could get new work for my GTX280. They run approximately 14.5 minutes in real time, and ca. 205 seconds in CPU time.

I've run a few. The run times in real time are just over 12 min on my 260. I can't agree about the gpu usage tho, I have found my gpu temp's on seti cuda are higher than gpugrid, but I have only run a few of the seti ones, so not sure about that yet(just a minor guess at the moment) Kinda funny they are going thru the same growing pains this project had at the start too.
