Message boards : Graphics cards (GPUs) : 8500 GT card takes day's to compute 1 WU!?

In my Q6600, VISTA host, a 8500GT card is present, but clearly is too slow for GPUGRID WU's.

Is it the card, or am I doing something wrong. It's probably the card. According to the table in the FAQ(http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=867), the 8500 GT is simply too slow. Extrapolating from the data in that table and what I observe on my computer, I expect you would see WU run times of 8 to 10 days. If that turns out to be correct, you won't be able to return work within the deadline. However, I wouldn't give up just yet. Let one work unit run continuously to see if it can finish before the deadline -- my extrapolated run times may not be accurate, and the numbers BOINC gives you certainly are wrong if you've never completed a WU for GPUGRID. If it can't finish in time, then you'll need to upgrade your video card to run GPUGRID. If it does finish within 5 days, you can run this project, but you'll need to babaysit the tasks manually to limit the queue to running only a single WU; normally on your computer it would try to give you 4 at once. (i.e., once it gives you your 4 WU's, let it start running 1 of them, then disable new work downloads, kill the 3 jobs that aren't running yet, and wait for the single running job to finish before allowing new work to be downloaded.) oh, if you're running GPU apps, you might want to give 6.6.20 a shot. It seems pretty stable and it keeps all 4 cores running without having to resort to the ncpus=5 hack.

Hi Mike, thanks for your swift answer, I've tried BOINC 6.6.9 on this VISTA host, 2 other QUAD's and 2 C2D's run XP. However, VISTA gave troubles, running 6.6.9.,or higher, I UPgraded 4 times in 2 month's. BOINC 6.4.7. works OK and I think, you're right about the 8500GT. 8800/9800 or 280, is much more capable for these task's, so I just have UPgrade, :( . And since I run SETI@home, I got used to work with xml files, needed to run SSSE3x optimized Multi Beam and SSE3 optimized ASTRO PULSE WU's. No problem there.

I've tried BOINC 6.6.9 on this VISTA host, 2 other QUAD's and 2 C2D's run XP. 6.6.20 is MUCH better than 6.6.9. ;) I'm running it on Vista (32) SP1. Only thing wrong with it, and this applies to ALL CUDA capable versions of BOINC, is that it can't run as a service on Vista. And I'm not sure if the work-fetch is behaving properly, mostly because I've got no clue how it's supposed to work now. But it is behaving reasonably well. The reason I don't like the ncpus hack is because this is not what it was designed for, and it will have side effects. For example, if you have no GPU work units, it's going to run 5 CPU tasks, which means you're going to constantly be context switching. ____________ Want to find one of the largest known primes? Hi Mike, thanks for your swift answer, I've tried BOINC 6.6.9 on this VISTA host, 2 other QUAD's and 2 C2D's run XP. You have to be very careful with all development versions many don't work well at all. And most of the 6.6.x versions are/were very bad. With two caveats, I can say that 6.6.20 may be one of the exceptions (thus being not that much worse or buggy than many "official" releases all of which have one bug or another, just usually not a show-stopper). First is that I am running it on XP Pro and OS-X and not Vista and second that I have only two days exposure. Those in mind I am seeing, to this point, reasonable behavior thought there is not perfection ... but, the oddities and things that I have mentioned on the mailing lists do not seem to be show-stoppers though I think they are things that should be corrected (though it is likely that that will happen).
