(I apologise if this is a redundant question at all.)

Sometimes I forget to exit BOINC when I'm running Second Life, and for my error I've been getting the occasional driver crash blue screen. I tried updating my nVidia driver, but have crashed once the exact same way since.

This only started happening after I accepted the CUDA challenge, and only (so far) when I'm running the graphics-intensive app at the same time as the GPU is crunching.

I have a AMD dual-core desktop with WinXP SP3, an 8800 GT, and am running BOINC 6.6.15. What else do you need to know to help me out, please?

Second Life is a graphically intensive program. You should not be running CUDA, which will saturate your GPU and leave nothing left over for Second Life.

There are some things you can try outlined here:
http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=471

Such as the cc_config.xml. It probably works better in 6.6.XX, when I tried using the cc_config.xml, it would halt all BOINC projects rather than just CUDA in 6.4.7.

Running CUDA and other graphics programs simultaneously is highly not recommended and can destabilize your system.
Updating your Drivers may help, and if you can capture a memory dump from the Blue Screen, NVIDIA may be interested and future driver releases will prevent your specific crash.

I thought it might be that, but I wanted to make sure. I do try to close BOINC beforehand, but sometimes I just forget... until I crash. Thank you for confirming that, Karplusan.

I did load the nVidia driver dated 4 April, but have crashed once since then, (because I forgot to close the BOINC, unsurprisingly). :/

How do I capture the memory dump? I've not had to do that before and don't know the procedure.

I understand about forgetting to exit BOINC on occasion, which is why I highly recommend looking over the website and trying out the cc_config.xml option. That should solve your problems. With that set, you won't have to remember to stop it when running SL, and you won't have to remember to start it again, once you are finished.

Also, knowing Linden Labs, it could very well be that the BSOD is caused by their client, rather than GPUGRID. If you were to get the full memory dump, Linden Labs may or may not fix that issue, as would NVIDA. If the cause running two apps that should not be running, then they will tell you to just run one or the other, and not be interested in digging through a large kernel dump for a bug only a few people may encounter.

Just a general FYI, to get the kernel dump, go to:
System Properties->Advanced->Startup and Recovery-> Bottom of the window are some debugging options.
Default is Small memory dump (64 KB) which is mostly useless if somebody actually wants to debug something. The other option is Kernel memory dump, which may generate a file somewhere between 3/4 - 3 GB, depending on your machine. There is a directory that shows you where the file will be saved.
%SystemRoot% is probably C:\WINDOWS on your system. Just open a command prompt and type "set", find the variable in there to be certain.

To be sure not to forget this you can use the BOINC setting - Advanced, Preferences, under tab Processor usage, "Use GPU while computer is in use". Deselecting this box will stop BOINC automatically whenever your PC is in use.

Kind regards

Alain
